Teaching an old dog new tricks

There are still things I'd love to learn. Some of them are academic, some are personal, some of them are pointless. Is it too late to teach an old dog new tricks? Nah.

I'm linking in again with Home Life Simplified's Listmania listapalooza to think about things I'd like to learn. After pondering it for a couple of minutes, I now know what I don't want to learn. I don't want to learn how to dig my own camp toilet. I don't want to learn how to milk a snake. Nor do I want to learn how to become a hillbilly hand fisher, as much as wading through muddy rivers and shoving my arm up to the shoulder in a dark underwater hole sounds appealing. I'd rather learn how to crap my dacks and have others be none the wiser.

But the things I'd like to learn, in all seriousness, are surprisingly quite a few.

I feel the pull to continue learning. I would like to return to Melbourne Uni one day and finish my Masters Degree in Deaf Education. I would love to learn how to become an audiologist so I can return to the real world of work and adult conversation. I would love to improve my Auslan skills.

I would love to learn German, Swedish and read braille.

I would love to learn how to crochet, paint with oils and keep plants alive.

I would love to learn how to ski, to meditate, to relax and to like myself.

I want to learn how to do at least one really amazing magic trick, or to do that flippy thing with a coin across my hand and back.

I want to learn to do the cup song just like Anna Kendrick can do. She is so awesome.

Now all I need to do is learn where I'm going to find the fecking time to do these things.

So, Old Dog - what new tricks do you want to learn?

  1. As a mum of just three - I take my hat off to you Lisa that you want to do more than just learn to deal with never ending children!!! Love your list! And nice to find your blog - Emily

    1. Thanks Emily! Do we ever stop learning how to deal with our kids? We just make up the game plan as we go along!

Bet you never thought you'd say "As a mum of JUST three."

  2. Surely looking after numerous children stimiltaneously, successfully, keeping a few plants alive should be a breeze. That said, looking after numerous children stimiltaneously, successfully, I would expect that you would not have the time for keeping plants alive!

By the way, I think I may have loved to have had an audiologist like you when I was younger. Hope you get to be one soon.

    1. I'm trying to raise kids that can do things for themselves and become independent. Plants don't seem to like taking care of themselves. I think my most successful garden would be a rock garden. I can't even grow grass well.

Thank you so much for the lovely comment. You have made my day! xx

    1. I have a brown thumb when it comes to gardening (that didn't sound very good, did it?) How about an anti-green thumb. Marginally better. Thanks Bec :)

    1. If I could stick my kids in a hole of dirt & have it rain on them now and then I would. Occasionally.

I WILL master the cup song! (coz I have so much time on my hands).

  5. I'd love to learn to be funny, but it's just something you've got or you don't, and you've got it!

  6. What a great list. I am impressed by all the things you can do already. Plants don't like me much either unless they are ones that thrive on neglect. Perhaps we just need to findmore of those sorts of plants!

    1. I use the neglect theory on my kids sometimes, but they always want want want - more food, more drink, clean clothes, money, the blood to stop...

I think Australia is a great place for neglectable plants. I'm doing great with the weeds.

  7. How bloody cool is that Anna Kendrick chick! I wanna learn that too!

I am absolutely certain that in the near future you will learn some of these wonderful things, even if it's just the fab coin trick - you are a mother of 5, you're pretty amazing you know!

    Brille - WOW!

P.S. They sell fab fake plants in Ikea hun...

    1. Sarah, I'm sure I can still kill Ikea plants, but it's a great idea so I will try it!
